My name is Vijaya. I am from India. I would like to share my opinions about arranged marriages and common-law relationships. An arranged marriage is a marriage planned by the families
of the bride and the groom. People also depend on matrimonial sites, match
making agents, trusted third party, friends and relatives to find a bride or a
groom. During this process, they usually compare the horoscopes of the bride
and the groom and proceed further to the engagement process if both the
families approve for the wedding. In most cases, the bride and the groom are
strangers and they come to know about each other only during and after the
wedding.
Most of the people in India are not much aware of common law relationships because we don’t follow that custom in India. I came to know about the common law relationships in detail only after coming to Canada and I was very surprised to hear about that. However, these days few celebrities in India started to opt for common law relationships but are not considered as a respectful relationship in Indian society.
Your writing is very clear, Vijaya. Can you give me a little more information about the age ranges of the men and women getting married in an arranged marriage in your culture?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about why common-law relationships are so popular here in Canada. It may have to do with our society wanting both men and women to have the chance to finish their education and establish their careers before establishing their family.
Also the "sexual revolution" in the 1960s and the expense of divorce would also be contributing factors. Could you find some statistics on the percentage of families with married and common-law parents? Before you check, take a guess at what you think the percentages are and see how close you get to the facts.
