Trailer of "Greeting"
I made a video of greetings.

My experience about greetings in Canada
In Japan, we bow to each other when we meet, or just say "Kon-nichi-wa (Hello)". We usually don't have body contact when greeting. It doesn't matter how close your relationship is. Even between family members, we rarely have body contact.
We know that people from other cultures greet with a kiss, a hug or a handshake, but most of us have no experience with it.
This is a story of a Japanese guy who came to Canada and struggled with what he should do in meeting and learnt how to deal with these situations, in other words, the story of my life.
When I first came to Canada, I met my wife's friend from Columbia. I kinda knew that those from Spanish-speaking countries were cheerful and passionate (I have to admit it was a bias) so I thought her friend came to me and gave me a kiss, or a hug. But how many kisses? Or how should I hug him? Who starts first??? I didn't know what to do. Before my turn, I saw he kissed on her cheek (I don't remember how many times because I was too nervous at the moment), so I waited for him giving me a kiss. But instead of kissing on my cheek, he hugged me so that my cheek flied in the air.
My second experience was in meeting with my wife's girl friend from Victoria, B.C. I was just going to say "Hi. Nice to meet you" because I thought I was not supposed to touch women's body.
But the truth is stranger than the fiction.
She came close to me and gave me a big hug! In fact, she was a cute girl. Well, it didn't matter whether she was cute or not. I was totally confused. Is this common in men and women meeting? Is this what we see every day? Is this Canada???
At that moment, I was truly completely in confusion so that my arms, which had nowhere to go, flied into the air.
What happens twice will happen three times.
When I moved to Guelph, I had another experience which made me re-acknowledge how difficult greeting was.
It occured between a friend of my wife who is from France and me. I am not such a fool as to make the same mistake. But, apparently I haven't learnt my lesson.
This time, I met him with caution because he was from France. To me, French people are elegant, well-dressed, like Parisien and Parisienne, so their greeting style was supposed to be elegant. Stereotype again.
I set up a hypothesis and a strategy about the meeting with him, which was like this; my experiences suggested that people don't give a kiss or a cheek in men and men meeting so he also doesn't give them to me. And in Europe, they usually give a big hug as greeting so that he probably will give a exellent, established hug to me. And if he doesn't give a hug, that's fine. I'm going to be able to follow his moving. That was my stupid, groundless hypothesis.
You may already know the result. Our greeting was very funny and all mixed up.
When I met him, I opened my arms to take his hug. That was the first and the last, and crucial mistake of my action. He, on the other hand, was going to give a handshake, but after seeing my opening arms, he followed my action and opened his arms. But at that moment, I tried to adjust my movement and shake his hand. Then he again tried to hand-shake, but it was too late! I tried to hug at the same time. If we'd had an audience, they must have thrown money at us.
This is my story, a story which tells you some lessons; Don't pretend to know. Stereotype is totally useless. And know each other, especially with people from different cultures.
In next post, I'll introduce you "greetings around the world" by a movie. Stay tuned with our blog!

The following article describes the basic difference between arranged marriage and forced marriage. In arranged marriages, the parents take the values of their son/daughter into consideration and search for the best match. where as in forced marriages the parents think that their choice is the best for their son/daughter. However in this generation parents do not force their children to marry the person of their choice.

speaking about what you should do for finding a job
This video is what I am talking about what we should do for finding a job. If you are interested, please click on it. (There is one thing I missed during making this video is that volunteering is a good way for you to get work experiences in Canada)
The longer I live in Guelph, the more I love Guelph
Canada is a wonderful country. The
government is thoughtful and helpful to the newcomers. The people are nice. Everyone I met is friendly and patient. I am glad I’m living here. Life has become slow and
quiet since I came here. I
engaged in structure design in Shanghai for 29 years before I came to Canada. Many municipal engineering projects were
designed by our company. Although we
are always busy in working and don’t have enough time to enjoy life, but we are
proud of ourselves be able to make the city beautiful and the traffic convenient. We are happy to have such a good chance to make
contributions to our city. (This is a
video about my hometown. May be one
day you would like to visit Shanghai. It
could be a good guide. INSIDE Shanghai| August 2014
Now, I’m a housewife. I have learnt a lot about
cooking. I study English every day. I am very grateful to the ESL school
teachers and classmates for their help. The
longer I live in Guelph, the more I love Guelph. But I still feel a little lost. I need to do something to make myself
useful. I don’t like only as a housewife to spend every day. I have
asked some friends about how to join the volunteer team. I’ll follow them to be a volunteer. Guelph will be my second hometown. I think my life here will be better and better.-by pinyu
Hi everybody again,
After I had searched about thal or sickle cell and listened to the brave child, Alex, I understood and believe that the prevention of thal better than treatment. So, I searched about population control of thal in the different countries. I think they put their restrictions and programs that depends on their cultures.
Population control of Thal:
In a number of Muslim countries including Lebanon, Iran, Saudia Arabia, Tunisia,United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Gaza, the national premarital programs are mandatory and aimed at limiting carrier marriage. In most of these countries, nowadays, interruption of the pregnancy is permitted for sever fetal disorder but only within the fourth month of gestation.
In China, prenatal screening was compulsory to obtain marriage permission by the marriage law office.
In Cyprus, however, the Orthodox Church requires a certificate proving that screening for beta thal has been performed before marriage. But allows the final decision on marriage and reproduction option to be left to the couple, but this certificate became unnecessary for civil weddings.
In the developed countries like Canada, the carrier screening is available upon request. In Canada a couple can live together without marriage like common law and have their children not only biological pregnancy but also children adoption.
On the other hand, how we can prevent thal or sickle cell, as the public:.
Sharing the information with others. Show it to our families, friends, neighbors, coworkers or anyone who has origins from areas where thal is common. Be sure to ask your Dr to test you for thal minor, I mean the person who is carrier the defect gene and without symptoms. Increased awareness is the key, please do your part by spreading the word.

Art Council in Iran
In general, there is not any Arts Council in Iran.
In Iran each section of arts have own Union and these unions help artists to get license or art workshops. In some cases, artists do not communicate directly with the unions, They communicate through the galleries or publishers .
Iranian artists are Independent and unfortunately they don`t have benefits or grants.
Usually they make exhibitions or are art`s teachers in school, university or tutoring.
The most active part of the art in Iran is cinema. And recently there has been progress in the cinema and directory. Iranian people like cinema more than other arts.
Leila Hatami is the Iranian favorite actress. Her father was a famous director and her mother was a actress as well. She played in the movie (The Separate) that got the Oscar last year.

Some Good Camping Tips for Natural Environment
Canada has good camping sites in conservation areas.
My family goes camping every summer, so I would like to introduce some good camping tips for protecting the natural environment.
First, I suggest, don’t bring disposable paper dishes or dixie cups. Camping at conservation areas can be a good natural education for your child or family. How about showing your good habits for the natural environment to your child? Your child will get a good impression about that.
Second, don’t use artificial detergent to wash your dishes at conservation areas. If you need to wash oily dishes, boil some water and put hot water in the dishes. After that, wipe the dishes with paper towels. The dishes will be clean, and you can gather the dirty water in a plastic bottle.
Third, when you go into the tent to sleep at night, keep all organic garbage or kitchen tools in the car because wild animal might visit your site. We don’t know what would happen if wild animals ate our seasoned food, how they would react to it.
Forth, when you leave there, don’t leave anything at your site. Most camping sites have garbage and recycling bins; therefore, sort the garbage following the rules. Especially, don’t dispose of used propane gas bottles with the general garbage because the leftover gas might make a fire.

Garbage and Recycling System in South Korea and Japan
I was born in South Korea and I lived in Japan for 3 years and half. South Korea and Japan have good garbage and recycle systems, but both countries are little bit different. South Korea has strong rules about garbage and recycling, so Korean has to follow the rules for saving moneys. However, Japanese joins to recycling by themselves.
South Korea........
First, in South Korea, garbage collections are not free. We use certificated garbage bags of municipal government. We can’t use any bags. Municipal governments provide garbage bags to supermarkets or grocery stores, and the stores sell garbage bags to citizen. If we fill garbage in the bag, governments collect just their garbage bags. Garbage bag is expensive, so we have to reduce waste and also have to sort recyclable materials for saving moneys. All rules require to someone who make waste garbage to pay about volume of garbage. If we buy a cup of coffee with paper cup at Starbucks, we pay some money for disposal paper cup, but no pay for mug. If we go to shopping, stores don’t provide free plastic bags. Therefore many people bring their own bags, or some people buy certificated garbage bags for shop-bought everythings, after then we can reuse the bags for waste garbage.

5â„“ - 10cent
10â„“ - 20 cent
50â„“ - $1
100â„“ - $2 (In Canada, general garbage bag that is sold in grocery store, is 75â„“)
paper cup - 10 cent (if you bring this cup to store, you can cash back)
plastic bag for shopping - 10 cent (if you bring this cup to store, you can cash back)
Sorting recyclable materials is not easy.
Plastic part:separate to plastic kind of PET, PVC, PP, PE, PSP.
Steel, Aluminum: wash and separate lid part from can’s cylinder.
Propane gas bin, spray bin: make a hole for blow out
Paper: fasten all paper with string, remove all from paper, wash, dry and make flat milk package,
no coating paper
Used batteries, fluorescent light: nearest community office.
Medicine: Pharmacy![]() |

JAPAN........
I lived in City of Nara in Japan. Nara is the first capital city of Japan. I think, Japan is operating perfect recycling system. Japanese consider all used stuff is not garbage, is resource. They try 3R Campaign that means Reuse, Reduce, Recycling. Japan does not strong rules about garbage, but they join in recycling by themselves.
I joined in recycling with 3 ways.
First way was government collection. All kind of plastic was collected every Wednesday and glass or Aluminum, iron steel were collected once per month by garbage trucks. For recycling, I washed glass bottles and removed all paper labels, after then I separated and put in the bins like colour bottle or clear bottle.
Second, when I went to shopping, I brought plastic bottles, egg cases, styrofoams to store. Most supermarket stores have recycling bins in front of their entrance. I put them in each bins.

Last, I collected newspaper, magazine, flyer paper and clothes for our community donation. Our apartment community supported concert tickets for the nearest high school from our place. We chose one recycling company and the company visited our place for collecting recycling stuff once per month. The company paid some money to the high school. I don't have the picture, but I was proud of supporting concert tickets to high school students with my a little efforts.
I wish our classmates join in recycling with pleasure.

After I listened to this conversation , I like the idea of the government shouldn't be telling parents what age appropriate for their children. For me, I believe parents should teach their children the main issues. e.x. religion, sex, tradition ... etc. That is because we live in a multi culture community and each culture has its own thoughts.
Global distribution of Thalassemia=Thal., sickle cell and its types : thal alpha, thal beta.
This map comes from http://www.kidsnewtocanada.ca/conditions/thalassemia
Thalassemia has found in people whose ethnic background are from the Mediterranean, Africa, the Middle East, Asian Subcontinent, Southern China and even Southeast Asia.In view of population migration, the distribution of the Thalassemia genes appears to be worldwide and to affect every ethnic group. It is common in these regions because it helps to protect carriers against malaria. The Red blood cell phenotype confers some protection against malaria. Thalassemia is a characteristic of the blood. It is inherited and passed on from parents to children, like hair color, eye color or skin color. It is passed equally by men and women. So if the parents carry that defect genes, 25% chance a child will inherit thalassemia from both parents.
It is not catching and will not turn into an illness. It affects the amount of hemoglobin in the red blood cells.
Hemoglobin is the protein in the red blood cell that carries oxygen to every part of the body. Hemoglobin
is made up of different building blocks called the beta (β)-globin chains and the alpha (α)-globin chains. Therefor the shape of RBC in thalassemia will be diffrent and like sickle, not as usual, and that why Thalassemia has another term"sickle cell".
What is the diagnosis of thalassemia in Ontario and symptoms?
newborn screening:These are routine tests done shortly after birth on every baby born in Ontario. A small sample of blood is taken from your baby and is tested for rare treatable disease. The sickle cell or Thalassemia one of them. If the baby has positive thalassemia newborn screening result, it does not mean the baby has it but very likely has it. More testing is needed to confirm the diagnosis.
Symptoms include weakness, fatigue, feeling faint, shortness of breath, paleness, frequent infections, poor appetite, bone problems, and enlarged organs.

career networking
Through this video I got a common idea how to build networking, which may open a door for you to get a new job. There is a few tips in the following:
(1)Divide your relationship into tow parts: personal and professional
(2)Never ask for a job, just ask advice from others
(3)Elevator speech
(4)Brand card
(5)How to build your networking by linkin.
start a career in Canada
I am a newcomer in Canada. My major focuses on agriculture. I got my education and work experiences in China. I have nothing in Canada. But companies in Canada value work experiences. This is a bad circle. And also because I have little knowledge about agriculture policies in Canada, and have no idea how to find a job here. So it's so hard to start a career in Canada.
here, I am trying to talk about how to start a career in Canada, based on what I learn from "occupation workshop" in Lutherwood.
(1) Improve your resume
You can keep one standard resume, but never use this standard one for all job positions. One specific resume for one job position. Highlight your typical skills.
(2) Build career networking
More than 80% job opportunities are hidden, Only less than 20% are advertised. Companies usually fill job vacation by the order of inner promotion, recommend from current workers, networking, recruiter, job posting and resume. It's important to build career networking, then you can get more chances in hidden jobs.
(3)To be volunteer or internship
You can gain valued work experiences by volunteering or internship.
(4)Information interview
This is a common way in Canada. you can get some advice from experienced persons in your field by information interview, including work situations, what's valued in your career in Canada, and what you should do in next step...etc. Sometimes, you may get some hidden job opportunities during information interview.

Greetings around the world
Last week I have posted a TED talk video that a comedian talks about his experiences of his encounter in the Middle East.
To go to the post, click here.
Continuing last week's theme, I'm going to write about how people greet each other in different cultures.
So I would like to introduce you to a blog, Heart of a vagabond, written by 7 bloggers who traveled around the world. They went around the world and wrote their experiences about greetings in those countries.
I'm gonna pick out some of their stories how different greetings are in defferent cultures and tell you how to do with situations that you meet people who comes from those countries.
Everyone greets each other with two kisses on the cheek: right cheek to right cheek, then left to left in women and women meeting, women and men meeting and even men and men meeting.
When you meet a person from Argentina, turn your right cheek, not left cheek in order to avoid real kiss.
Polish people are quite emotional as well as careful.
it's common to greet each other with three kisses on alternate cheeks (it often starts with left cheek). This greeting is between men and women, not between guys. Guys shake their hands and raise their hand. Polish often shout when they see each other, which is a polite way in Poland.
During negotiations, handshaking has different meaning in Poland. A handshake means "it's deal!!".
When you see a person who shout "Hi!" cheerfully, she/he might be from Poland so say hi emotionally and cheerfully too!
In Canada, as well as in Guelph, greetings are very straightforward(easy to understand). You shake hands when you first meet someone and give a hug or a kiss(es) (usually right cheek) to good friend and family members.
These greetings are common in Guelph so that it's a better way to stretch out your hand when you meet a person whom you don't know where she/he is from.
In Dubai, men greet each other with rubbing their noses, which is a traditional Bedouin greeting and rubbing noses is a sign of deep respect. Some women do it as well in the privacy of their homes.
If you meet someone from Dubai and his face is approaching your face, don't panic. He's not trying to kiss you but show his respect to you. Enjoy a cultural exchanges.
In Mongolia, when people greet with each other during a ceremony, festival or other special occasion, they will offer their snuff bottles in the palm of right hand, with the lid partially opened. Snuff is a scented, smokeless tobacco. If you receive the snuff bottle, you should take out a pinch of snuff by using attached spoon. You then place the pinch of tobacco on the back of your hand then smell it. Even if you have an allergy to pollen or sniffles, it's respectful to hold the bottle close to your nose.
This is a very interesting style of greeting. If there is someone who is from Mongolia and lives around Guelph, please contact me through the comment. I really want to sniff the bottle!

In Japan, we usually don't touch your body and also try to show you "non-offensive". When we greet, we make a bow while we hold right arm(list) by left hand because we can't pull out a Japanese sword as long as holding right arm (a cover of Japanese sword is supposed to be on your left waist).
Exchanging business card (name card) is also an essential element of Japanese greeting. If you don't prepare any cards in business, you have no voice at this day. To avoid the tragedy, Japanese people always have thousands of business card in their bag.
"I wouldn't mind a little bow. In Japan, they bow. I love it. Only thing I love about Japan. But read books! Read statistics! Shaking hands causes viruses and flus. Tremendous germs are on the hands. It's not elitist. It's just common sense." said Donald Trump.
Yes. We bow instead of touching your body. According to one theory, Ninja utilized handshaking to kill their enemies. We can't tell whether it's true or not.
I hope these information will help you to understand greeting from different cultures and hope you won't hesitate to greet to everyone in spite of cultural differences.

The available treatment
Regular blood transfusions provide thalassemia patients with the red blood cells they need to survive. Once these red blood cells are broken down, however, the body is left with an excess of iron.
Although iron is essential to the body, excess iron can lead to organ failure and death. It is necessary that this excess iron be removed, or ch-elated, because it stores in the vital organs of the body, such as the heart and liver.
There are varity of medicine that use to chelate over load iron:oral and injection. Both, they have side effects. The choosing of medicine depends on the amout of accumalated iron and another consederations like the age. Children have to go to the hospital to rid the extra iron after receiving the blood but the adult can use the injection pump.
1-{chelation},It must be around 12 hrs every month.
2-Intravenous medication, regularly blood transfussion, once every three weeks. He has to get a needle. It`s stayed in his arm for about six hrs. Alex described, It`s scarying for few moment when the needle does going in.. . His mother said, "It means you give a life."
